Hot chocolate is usually thought of as treat rather than a healthy drink. It’s commonly filled with sugar, cream, and processed chocolate. I have found that you can achieve the same rich texture and heavenly flavor without using any sugar or processed ingredients. This good-for-you hot chocolate recipe is sugar-free, whole food plant based, low fat, and incredibly delicious!
Similar to my favorite matcha latte, this cozy hot chocolate is naturally sweetened with medjool dates, which also help to create a thick, velvety consistency. Dates are a low glycemic whole food sweetener and are rich in copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, B vitamins and fiber. The chocolate flavor in this recipe comes from cacao powder, a less processed version of cocoa that retains more minerals including significant amounts of iron and magnesium. Feel free to use cocoa, though, it will still be delicious!
This quick and easy recipe comes together in minutes using a blender. I topped mine with vegan marshmallows (yum!), but you can use non-dairy whipped cream or no topping- it is incredibly delicious all on its own!
*Alternatively, you can use 1/4 cup of raw cashews blended with 1 cup of hot water. This makes it an entirely whole food plant-based hot cocoa and it is so creamy and delicious!
